{28-29/31 days} lessons learned: business

This is day 28-29 of my 31 days of coffee shop stories. Welcome.

Venturing into an unknown world of a business is always a tricky thing. Even if you have certain know-how, there are always unpredictable things that can happen, things that can go wrong, people who will disappoint you.

Running the coffee shops, there is always something new to learn. The first two years were tough and we came close to closing more than once. But we learned and we did better every day. Maybe this is the key.

Here are some of the most important business lesson I learned and might help you, too.

  1. Always hire the right people in the right positions. Just like hiring chefs for cooking, and waiters for waiting tables, hire a manager to manage things. Not having a manager is probably the biggest mistakes we ever made, and we are still paying the costs of our foolish mistake of thinking we can do it all.
  2. Ask a lawyer before signing any contract. It might seem obvious, but well… sometimes it’s just good to be reminded.
  3. Do your math with two digits after decimal point, you’d be surprised what the rounding adds up to at the end of the month.
  4. Choose your partners wisely: be it suppliers, marketing partners or even employees. Every partner you choose can affect your image, for better or for worse.
  5. Keep yourself fresh and alert and always try to obtain the best for your clients and, subsequently, your business.
