33 lessons

Hello from 33 years and 1 day. I look back at me at 18 years old, at 25 years old and at 30 years old and I see layer upon layer of experiences and memories and I am not really sure which goes where in this whole package that is me. But I think it’s a cool package and I am very happy with all the things that go in it and with it. Randomly below are some of the things I learned about me and the world in these 12,054 days on earth.

  1. Do good as often as you can. Do good always.
  2. Hard work pays off, sooner or later.
  3. Family is important.
  4. Friends are important.
  5. Being comfortable when alone is very important.
  6. Crying is a good way of letting go and draining excess of cortisol. Crying in public is not an issue.
  7. Exercising is good for you. Running is a great pastime with yourself. Yoga can be what you need it to be. The harder the workout, the clearer the mind.
  8. Don’t carry a grudge or an argument from one day to the next, let alone from one week, one month or one year to the next.
  9. Travel a lot. Travel in places you know and look at them with fresh eyes. Travel in places you don’t know and marvel at everything they have to offer.
  10. Drink a lot of water. Or tea. No sugar.
  11. Say what’s on your mind. Make sure you do this politely and considerately, but do it, no matter how hard.
  12. Always leave room for dessert.
  13. Send postcards, they make people happy.
  14. Read a lot. Watch movies and go to the theater. Listen to all sorts of music. You will be all sorts of rich, thanks to these.
  15. Say thank you, I am sorry, hello.
  16. Put yourself in somebody else’s shoes, at least once every day. It’s not always comfortable, but it makes you a better person.
  17. Let go of things, situations and people that are not good for you. It will be good for you.
  18. The sea is magic. Nature is magic, but the sea even more so.
  19. It’s ok not to have a favorite season, you can love them all equally.
  20. You can learn a lot from animals, you should pay more attention to your cat. Or your dog. Or your golden fish. Or your turtle. Or the wild animals in documentaries.
  21. Don’t drink your calories.
  22. Baking or cooking for someone is a clear sign that you care. No matter the result.
  23. Take good care of yourself, so you can take better care of the ones around you.
  24. Don’t judge. Don’t gossip. Don’t say anything that might hurt someone.
  25. It’s ok to be sad sometimes. It’s ok to want to be alone.
  26. Don’t let your ego stand in the way.
  27. Learn something new as often as you can.
  28. Cultivate hobbies. They make you a nicer person.
  29. Think about the future, but not too much. Don’t dwell on the past. Make sure you truly are when you are where you are.
  30. It is never too late for anything. Just start. Make each day count.
  31. Time is precious. Time is the most precious thing you can share with the world and you should do that freely. But do keep some time for yourself.
  32. Mistakes are not something to be ashamed of. We are only human.
  33. Dare to try new things (experiences, food, dancing moves). As far as we all know, you only live once.

This list is a work in progress, as I am as well. We’ll just see what the future has in store for me…
